State onsite-wastewater regulations set different minimum tank capacities based on bedroom count, local soil and site conditions, and the specific design approach required. This page compiles published statewide minimum values for 46 of the 50 states; four states — Michigan, California, Arkansas, and Wisconsin — do not produce a single statewide bedroom-to-tank figure. Where a statewide value exists, it is a planning baseline for a conventional gravity system and may differ from what a specific project requires.
For a four-bedroom home, the published statewide minimum runs from 1,000 gallons in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Washington to 2,000 gallons in Ohio. Local rules, site conditions, system type, and equipment can push the requirement higher. The source for every value is linked in the primary sources list and in the table below.
Septic tank size chart: minimum capacity by bedrooms and state (Table 1)
Most states set a minimum of 1,000 gallons for a home of one to three bedrooms, but the real answer is fixed by your state's onsite-wastewater code and ranges from a 500-gallon one-bedroom allowance to 2,000 gallons for a larger home. Values are minimums for a conventional single-family gravity system. Garbage disposals, pumped systems, larger homes, and stricter local rules can push the requirement higher.
Dataset status: A star (★) marks a state whose code we read and confirmed directly against the primary source — 15 states so far, including the Arkansas hold. The remaining 35 states are compiled from the cited primary source and are being independently re-verified. Every state links to its source in the primary sources list below.

Notes on specific states
Arkansas (verification hold). We publish no Arkansas number. The state's current onsite-wastewater materials don't agree on a three-bedroom home: ADH installer/rules guidance lists 1,000 gallons for 1–3 bedrooms and 1,250 at 4, while the ADH alternative-systems manual (Rule 007.04.93-005) lists 1,250 at 3–4 bedrooms. Because the controlling source doesn't support one value, confirm the requirement with ADH or its authorized agent.
California (no single figure). California doesn't reduce to one statewide bedroom number. The California Plumbing Code Appendix H (Private Sewage Disposal Systems) sets statewide sizing provisions, but the State Water Board's OWTS Policy lets approved Local Agency Management Programs use different standards, and local agencies commonly set the binding requirement. There are roughly 1.2 million onsite systems in the state. Confirm with your local agency.
Colorado. Table 9‑1 starts at “2 or 3 bedrooms” (1,000 gallons) and doesn’t list a one-bedroom value, so we don’t extrapolate one. Low-flow fixtures don’t reduce the required size, though certain treatment configurations can allow less than 1,000 gallons with 48-hour detention.
Wisconsin. Wisconsin sizes tanks from a flow calculation (roughly 150 gpd/bedroom × a 2.088 service-cycle factor), which for a three-bedroom home computes to about 940 gallons. That's a regulatory-minimum math output — not a tank you can buy or install. Actual capacity is set by the sanitary permit and the approved-product list, so we don't publish a bedroom-to-tank value for Wisconsin.
What does this data show — and what doesn't it?
It shows the statewide minimum tank capacity that each state's regulation assigns to a home by bedroom count, plus the design-flow assumption behind it. It does not show what your county requires, what your soil allows, or what a designer will actually spec for your site. These are planning baselines, not final designs. Three limits matter before you use any number here:
- Published statewide values are planning baselines. Local rules may be stricter and often are. State rules can also authorize variances, alternative-system reductions, or product-based exceptions, so the statewide figure is a baseline, not a guarantee.
- These are conventional gravity-system minimums. Aerobic treatment units, mound systems, and pumped or grinder systems are sized differently, and several states add capacity when a garbage disposal is present.
- A number in a table is not a permit. The applicable permitting authority — and any designer or evaluator required in that jurisdiction — sets the binding requirement after a soil and site evaluation.
How should you read the state chart?
Find your state, read across to your bedroom count, and treat the result as a planning baseline — the minimum your state's code assigns before local rules and site conditions apply. Two reading rules save people from the most common mistakes:
Count bedrooms, not people.Bedroom count is the most common residential sizing input, because it stands in for a home's potential occupancy over its lifetime, not who lives there today. Some states layer on design flow, floor area, fixture count, equipment, or occupancy on top of the bedroom count. What actually counts as a bedroom is set by the applicable state and local code — labels like “den,” “bonus room,” or “finished attic” don't decide it on their own, so check the definition your jurisdiction uses.
A garbage disposal changes the answer in several states.Georgia and Minnesota require 50% more capacity with a disposal; New York treats a grinder as an extra bedroom; North Carolina doubles the required capacity when a grinder pump feeds the tank. If you have or want one, check your state's rule, not just the base number.
If an addition changes your permitted bedroom count, use the higher count when reading this chart and confirm the final design with the permitting authority. Adding capacity later can mean replacing the tank, adding a second tank, or another approved change.
How many bedrooms can a 1,000-gallon septic tank support?
In most states a 1,000-gallon tank is the minimum for a home of up to three or four bedrooms — but the exact ceiling depends entirely on the state. A 1,000-gallon tank is the code minimum for a home of up to four bedrooms in 17 states, including South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Washington, but only up to two bedrooms in Ohio, where a three-bedroom home already requires 1,500 gallons.
Reading Table 1 precisely — "the highest bedroom count whose statewide minimum is at or below 1,000 gallons":
- 1,000 gallons meets the minimum through 4 bedrooms in the 17 states that hold 1,000 through four bedrooms: South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Washington, Alabama, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maine, Mississippi, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
- 1,000 gallons meets the minimum through 3 bedrooms in the large group of states that step up at four bedrooms: Alaska, Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New York, Rhode Island, Utah, and more.
- 1,000 gallons is already below the minimum at 3 bedrooms in Ohio (1,500), Iowa and New Hampshire (1,250), and Massachusetts (1,500 flat).
How many bedrooms can a 1,500-gallon septic tank support?
A 1,500-gallon tank covers most single-family homes — commonly up to five or six bedrooms — and in Massachusetts it's the minimum across the range. Using the same framing — "the highest bedroom count whose statewide minimum is at or below 1,500 gallons" — a 1,500-gallon tank satisfies the state minimum through five to six bedrooms in the majority of states in Table 1. In Ohio it covers only up to three bedrooms, because Ohio requires 2,000 gallons at four.
Septic tank size statistics: key findings from our 2026 state review
Across our 50-state review, 1,000 gallons is the most common statewide minimum, but the range is wide and four states publish no single numeric schedule at all.
- The 2× spread (verified): For a four-bedroom home, the statewide minimum runs from 1,000 gallons (South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Washington) to 2,000 gallons (Ohio). Ohio is the only state at 2,000; 17 states hold 1,000.
- The three-bedroom baseline: In our current compilation, the large majority of states that publish a fixed three-bedroom minimum set it at 1,000 gallons. Five use a 900-gallon floor (Florida, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia), two use 1,250 (Iowa, New Hampshire), and two use 1,500 (Ohio, Massachusetts).
- The lowest minimums: The smallest figure in the dataset is Louisiana's 500-gallon allowance for a one-bedroom home. Eight states set a 750-gallon one-bedroom minimum (Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Mississippi, New Mexico, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia).
- Formula-derived states: Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Louisiana, Texas, Vermont, and Wisconsin derive the minimum from a design-flow formula rather than a printed bedroom table.
- Equipment overrides: Georgia and Minnesota add 50% for a garbage disposal; New York adds a bedroom-equivalent for a grinder; North Carolina doubles capacity for a grinder or lift pump before the tank; Arizona raises the tier when fixture counts cross a threshold; Florida and Texas factor in building area.
Why do septic tank size requirements differ so much by state?
States use four fundamentally different methods to set tank size, which is why no single national chart can be right. Some publish a fixed bedroom schedule; others compute size from a design-flow formula; some add fixture-count or floor-area overrides; and a few don't publish a single statewide number at all.

That structural variety is the real story. It's not that states disagree by a few hundred gallons; it's that they answer the question in different units. A four-bedroom home is a 1,000-gallon job in South Carolina, a 1,250-gallon job in New York, a 2,000-gallon job in Ohio, and — in California — a question you take to your county.
What's the difference between septic tank capacity and daily design flow?
Tank capacity is how many gallons the tank holds; daily design flow is how many gallons of wastewater the home is expected to produce per day. They're different values and shouldn't be used interchangeably. Regulators start with design flow — an estimate of daily wastewater — and then require a tank large enough to hold a multiple of it so solids can settle before effluent reaches the drainfield.

The capacity multiple is state-specific too: Massachusetts requires 200% of design flow (with a 1,500-gallon floor), Kansas requires at least 2×, and Louisiana requires 2.5×. So when a generic chart says “3 bedrooms = 1,000 gallons,” it's collapsing two different measurements and one national average into a number that no state's code produces uniformly.
When can the state chart be overridden?
Frequently. A stricter county rule, a soil evaluation, a garbage disposal, a pump, or a system type other than conventional gravity can all replace the statewide minimum — usually with a larger number. The statewide figure in Table 1 is the floor. It gets overridden in predictable ways:
Local health departments. Most states let counties and districts require more than the state minimum. In California, the binding numeric requirement commonly comes from the local agency or an approved local management program rather than a single statewide table.
Michigan specifically. Michigan has no statewide septic code. Requirements are set by individual counties and townships; confirm local requirements with the relevant county or township authority.
Site conditions. Soil percolation, depth to groundwater, and setbacks can force a larger tank, an advanced treatment unit, or a different system entirely — determined by the on-site evaluation, not the bedroom count.
Garbage disposals and pumps. Georgia and Minnesota add 50% for a disposal; New York adds a bedroom-equivalent for a grinder; North Carolina doubles capacity for a grinder or lift pump before the tank.
What septic tank size does South Carolina require?
South Carolina requires a minimum 1,000-gallon tank for any dwelling of four bedrooms or fewer, then adds 250 gallons for each bedroom above four — so a five-bedroom home needs 1,250 gallons and a six-bedroom home needs 1,500. The controlling rule is South Carolina Regulation 61-56, Section 201.1(3), administered by the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES).

Two details are worth knowing. First, SCDES sizes the drainfield from a separate residential design-flow assumption of about 120 gallons per bedroom per day— a different measurement from tank capacity. Second, a widely repeated version of this rule online states that South Carolina requires 1,000 gallons for three bedrooms and 1,250 for four. That's incorrect: the regulation's own text says 1,000 gallons “shall be sufficient to serve dwellings of four (4) bedrooms or less.” We flag it because it's a clean example of why reading the primary source matters.

How did we build and verify this dataset?
We went to each state's controlling onsite-wastewater regulation — the state administrative code or the issuing agency's published design standards — and recorded the minimum tank capacity by bedroom count, the design-flow assumption, the citation, and the date we checked it. We did not use commercial charts or tank-seller pages as evidence for any number.
Our process, stated plainly:
- Primary sources only.For each state we used the state administrative code, or the issuing agency's own design manual when that document supplies the controlling schedule or formula. Seller charts and contractor blogs were used for nothing.
- Direct values were copied; derived values were calculated. Where a state prints a bedroom schedule, we copied it. Where a state gives a design-flow formula, we calculated the minimum from the published variables and labeled the result as calculated (ᶜ). We preserved formula outputs honestly rather than dressing a math result up as an off-the-shelf tank.
- No generic fallback, and no invented number where sources conflict.Where the answer belongs to a local authority (California), we say so. Where the current rule doesn't yield a consistent value (Arkansas), we hold and publish nothing. Where a state publishes only a formula output (Wisconsin), we don't present a bedroom-to-tank figure.
- We labeled our confidence. States marked ★ in Table 1 are ones we read and confirmed directly against the code — 15 so far: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Washington. This is a planning reference, not a permit, a design, or legal advice — and it's a snapshot of rules that change.
- Published statewide values are planning baselines. Your county or local health department can require more, and often does. Confirm locally before you design or install.
- Conventional gravity systems only. Aerobic units, mounds, and pumped systems are sized differently; disposals and grinder pumps add capacity in several states.
